Merit badges can be pursued by any scout, with excellent opportunities offered at Merit Badge University (March) and Summer Camp (June). Best way to explore the over 135 subjects available is to check BSA’s Merit Badge webpage.
For Troop 48, the desired workflow is 1) Pick a subject, 2) Obtain the merit badge pamphlet from troop library, 3) Print out the workbook from usscouts.org (unfortunately better organized meritbadge.org was taken down), 4) Contact Mr. Hasler to be connected with an appropriate Merit Badge Counselor, 5) Show your stuff (worksheets are for your reference, but requirements that say Show or Demonstrate mean those specific actions), 6) Turn in counselor’s signed approval that all requirements were completed to their satisfaction – with a date, and 7) Be recognized at the subsequent Court of Honor.
Merit Badge Counselors are available who are experts on the topics through their job, interests, or experience. These counselors complete certification paperwork, thus become preferred counselors for Troop 48 . If there is a gap, we’ll connect you with one certified by Sequoyah Council. Just shoving a piece of paper for any adult leader to sign is not appropriate.
