Troop 48 weekend adventure

Scouting for Food with Continuous Campfire, Scout Sunday February 6-8. 

Held at CHPC. A good overnighter or two for newer scouts to complete early rank camping and cooking requirements, while the entire troop collects food donations, practices for Klondike Derby, oversees a campfire lasting during the entire event, and attends Sunday worship service. Popcorn and hot chocolate each night. We need good attendance and adults to help. We have taken a large ad out to run Wednesday thru Saturday in the Kingsport Times-News.

Firewood delivery this Saturday (Feb 7) morning. Meet at the firewood lot at 8:30am to deliver to two houses, then the group will come to the Continuous Campfire.

Congratulations!  David Kalil is Troop 48’s newest Eagle Scout #194. We are so proud of this young man for all his accomplishments!!! Well done!!

February patrol duties:

• Ceremonies: Flaming Arrow  • Food Box: Wolf  • Game Guides: Fox  • PLC (2/10) Host and Troop Meeting Set-up: Eagle  • Service: Phoenix (Clean up and leadership assistance)  • Can Recycling: Panther (check every week)  

Snow Tubing at Hawksnest – Saturday, February 15. Registration is now open. Registration closes after the next meeting. Parents must complete the waiver form.

Mark your calendars for a few spring events in the life of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church. A Fat Tuesday (February 17) pancake supper is scheduled for 5:30pm. All are welcome to attend however the gym will be closed until the meal is done. Troop 48 meeting will begin in the Jones building if the dinner event is prolonged. 

Ash Wednesday worship service will be on February 18 at 6:00 pm. Four special Sunday night Bible studies will be held during Lent at 5:00 pm from February 22 through March 15. Palm Sunday will be March 29, and Easter Sunday will be on April 5.

Tri-District Klondike Derby February 20–22.

Registration and payment have been completed for the Scouts who indicated they plan to attend the Tri-District Klondike Derby. A roster will be posted at upcoming troop meetings for your review. We need to finalize our plans and require immediate clarification on the following roster information as of January 20 Current Patrol Rosters: 5 sleds 

1-Sumo Bear  (+1): Ryan, Christopher, Kellen, Gillian, Aidan B., and Luke T. (Note: Phoenix currently only has one Scout). Lemon sled 

2- Wolf/Fox (Combined name predators ): Max, Finn, Grant, Coy,Arthur Lexi, Ester and Perl. (Note: We need to confirm if  Griffin is attending). Batman sled 

3- Panthers: CJ, Cole, Carter,  Ender TJ Jonathan W , and Ryan M – Old red sled 

4- Flaming Arrow: Cristian, Robbie, Andrew Cox, Jacob D, Jackson,Wilson, Isaac M, Jeremy, and Wyatt.- silver racer conquistador sled 

5- Eagle: Lucas, Xander, and Sam,Sutton  and Daniel. Liam H possibly – sled:gone fishing 

-2 sleds/  sleds not being used. Beast, Box, or wagon 

Action Required:

Please review these lists and provide any missing scouts that should be registered as soon as possible so we can finalize our attendance.  If anyone is not attending and is listed please contact Julieann White or Jerry Browning ASAP!!!

We need adults to help cook meals for our teams! This event is the only one that the adults feed our scouts! If you feel like your sled reservation is incorrect please see Daniel McNabb

Funds for the payment were taken from individual scout accounts. Please see Mr. Browning to see if you need to add money to your account to cover the $25 cost per scout for the registration. 

START YOUR KLONDIKE PRACTICE 

Knowledge of knots – Sled participants will be challenged to tie knots common to scouting. 

First aid – Each patrol and patrol member will be called upon to explain and/or demonstrate first aid concepts common to scouting.  

Fire starting – Sled teams will work together to follow instructions of the station leader to build a fire and accomplish a task. Materials will be available in addition to the materials on the sleds. 

Cross cut saw – Sled teams will receive instruction on using a crosscut saw and will then pair up to demonstrate the skill of cutting blocks from logs using the saw. 

Tomahawk Throw – Sled participants will have the opportunity to throw tomahawks at a target, improving their technique and accuracy. 

Ferry Pull – Sled teams will work together to construct a ferry using materials on their sled and provided at the station, and then demonstrate that the ferry can…..ferry, across the waters.

WPSP Conservation Event, February 28th Gather in WPSP Duck Island parking lot by 9am to split into crews to pick up recyclables and trash on the island (including in the woods) plus mainland if additional two-deep adult leadership is available.  Afterwards, another scouting requirement will be offered depending on choice made at the prior troop meeting (and weather). Let us know if you would like Orienteering or a Rocket Launch, weather depending.

February 28th Noon Garage Cleaning Attendance from each patrol is QM and anyone who would like to participate in cleaning the Troop garage. Confirm plans with Grant.

March 3 Troop Meeting Mr. Jason Booher, Sullivan County Election Commissioner, will be attending to cover  the First Class requirement to discuss the constitutional rights and obligations of a U.S. citizen.  The entire troop will attend the ~20 minutes sharing starting around 7:30pm. 

MBU March 7 at Northeast State Community College Blountville, TN  

Revised cost is $30 for Scouts BSA (patch, lunch, and up to two classes), $25 for Adults (patch, lunch and up to two classes), $10 for Non-Participating Adults (patch and lunch).  Troop 48 is registering as a group. Pay fees to Mr. Browning, and see Mr. Hasler to sign up for classes (scouts and adults). See T48.org meeting notice for class list or paper copies in the troop meeting crate.

Philmont Cavalcade – Final payment of $607.50 due March 1, 2026. Please make payment to Mr. Browning by Feb. 24th.

CHPC Spring Lock In – March 13th

Registration is open for the ever popular event.

NEW INFORMATION:

Boone Trail District Banquet – March 5th, 6:30 PM at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church, Blountville, TN. Come celebrate as the district recognizes adult leaders who have earned special awards and assisted so many scouting units. A delicious meal will be served. Registration is open.

Get Ready for CHPC’s Annual Garage Sale happening on March 27 & 28. Donations may be dropped starting Saturday, March 21. Please speak with Doris Fields or Karen Dale to learn more or to sign up to help.

Service Opportunity- Meadowview Dog Show – April 11, 17: Organizers of this event require help on April 11 (Saturday) to unload equipment and supplies to set up the show. They also require help on April 17 (Friday) to help take down and load equipment and supplies. They plan to donate leftover packaged food and money  to the troop. This service project will require up to 6 scouts and 2 adults in the afternoon to assist. Please let Mr. Browning or Ms. White know if you would like to help.

Sequoyah Council Expo – Save the date – May 1-3, 2026. The traditional Sequoyah Council Expo is back for the first time since Covid to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Sequoyah Council. How many older scouts remember this fun filled weekend? Camping, Vendor Booths, Food Trucks, Exhibitions, Unit Demonstrations and much more. The event will take place at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Abingdon, VA.

Camp Davy Crockett Summer Camp (June 14-22) 

Actions required:

• Next payment ($150 total with prior deposit) is now due in early February.   Troop 48 will have a ~$4,000 transfer to make at the end of the month.
• For those that have paid the above amount, see Mr. Hasler to sign up now to obtain classes you want.
• Register on T48.org (booking link) to indicate your housing preference (default is Cabin, options for CDC Tent, T48 tent, personal tent, and personal hammock).
• Arrange for an annual check-up to have a current medical form in the troop files.
• Adult leaders, please consider being involved, even if you need to split a week.  Seeking two more registered leaders to have five adults on-site at all times. 

Sea Base 2027 We have successfully secured five crews for our Coral Reef Sailing Adventure at Sea Base in 2027!  This means we have an incredible 40 slots available for this trip.  Mark your calendars, as the adventure will take place from December 27, 2027, to January 2, 2028.  We will be flying out on December 27, 2027, checking into Sea Base on December 28, 2027, and returning on January 2, 2028.

To secure your spot, the first payment of $250 is due by February 10, 2026. The second Sea Base payment of $600 will be due by October 20, 2026, and the final Sea Base payment of $545 will need to be made by September 14, 2027.  These payments are the amounts due to Sea Base for each person.  In addition to these payments, please be aware that there will be additional expenses for transportation, lodging, and meals.
