Colorful wood ducks sometimes swim in Boone Fo rk creek. Allow at least 3 hours of daylight-walking time on this moderate to strenuous 5.5-mile loop trail. Access the trail at the wooden footbrid ge in Price Park Picnic area (milepost 296.4). TRACK Trail for first 1 mil e.\n\nGeology (Merit Badge Book)\n\nMining_in_Society (Merit Badge Book)\n \n\nThe Blowing Rock Site Map\n\nLinville Falls Hiking Trails\n\n\n\n\n\n\ n\n\n\n\n\nTwo main hiking trails lead to views of Linville falls. Both be gin at the Linville Falls Visitor Center and pass through remnants of a vi rgin hemlock forest mixed with other familiar tree species such as white p ine\, oaks\, hickory\, and birch. A colorful and varied display of wildflo wers decorates the trails in spring. Red and golden leaves in fall beautif ully contrast with the soothing green of hemlocks. The Linville Falls trai ls range in difficulty from moderate to strenuous.\n\nErwins View Trail\nA moderate 1.6 mile round-trip walk\, offering hikers four overlooks\, each revealing a different aspect of the Linville Falls area.\n\nThe first ove rlook is 0.5 miles from the visitor center\, and is a moderate walk with a slight loss of elevation. Here\, the Linville River spills gently over th e upper falls where it widens and pauses. Drifting into a narrow canyon\, the water suddenly spirals out of sight and plunges 45 feet over the lower falls.\n\nThe next overlook\, Chimney View\, 0.7 miles from the visitor c enter\, is the first point on the trail where the lower falls can be seen. It offers an excellent change to photograph both the upper and lower fall s. The overlook is named for the chimney-like rock outcroppings located to the right of the waterfall. The trail is strenuous in this area with cons iderable elevation gain.\n\nAt Gorge View Overlook\, hikers can see the Li nville River cutting its way through the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area.\n \nThe Erwins View Trail ends at Erwins View Overlook\, 0.8 mile from the v isitor center. From this vantage point hikers can enjoy a panoramic view o f the Linville Gorge and a distant view of the upper and lower falls.\n\nL inville Gorge Trail\nThe trails to Linville Gorge (1.4 miles round trip) a nd to Plunge Basin (1 mile round trip) also start at the visitor center. T he trail to Linville Gorge forks 0.2 mile from the visitor center. The rig ht fork takes hikers to Plunge Basin Overlook where they can view the lowe r falls and the Chimneys. The left fork winds down through rock cliffs to the bottom of the falls where the force of the water cascading over the fa lls creates a large pool. Both of these trails are strenuous.\n\nSwimming in the Linville River and climbing on the rocks is dangerous and not allow ed.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \;\n20210604 Troop 48 The Emerald Mine - Day Hik e - MB Advancement (Trip Sheet)\nPacking Checklist\n2021 Troop 48 The Eme rald Mine - Day Hike - MB Advancement Camping Plan\nThe trip will consist of late afternoon departure from CHPC. Expect to arrive @ Julian Price Cam pground around 6:30 PM. We will look to set up camps and then eat a sack d inner. Set up for a PLC / unstructured campfire.\n\nSaturday will be a FUL L DAY. Early rise @ 6:00 AM followed by patrol grab and go breakfast. The group should be on the trail by 7:00 AM and finished before 10:00 AM. We w ill leave for Doc Rocks 10:15 and eat our durable sack lunch before MB cla ss starts @ 11:00. With 2 MB classes (Geology and Mining in Society) the c lass will take 4 hours. Adults and Scouts will tour the museum and execute gem/ore mining at the level they have purchased to participate. Following the class\, we will depart for The Blowing Rock and leverage a short (~.5 mile) hike to get group photos at the scenic offerings and view the conse rvatory. There will be full Troop 48 style campfire following dinner (patr ols plan accordingly).\n\nSunday there will be a Troop 48 church service a nd unscheduled free time before lunch. Our departure to Linville Falls wil l follow\, consisting of a nice tour and our arrival @ CHPC around 6:30 PM .
